Hewlett Packard is working on a Windows tablet for enterprises that could give the iPad a run for its money, the internet has revealed.
A PowerPoint slide said to have been leaked to the website Neowin reveals that the world’s largest PC maker has a fairly thin, fairly light tablet known as the Slate 8 in the works, that you’ll be able to control either with your fingers or with one of those digital input pens which helped to hold back the popularity of Windows tablets the last time around.

Microsoft fixes critical Hotmail password bug
Microsoft has issued a temporary fix for a scary and potentially disastrous Hotmail vulnerability that could allow hackers to erase your email password, set up their own and take over your account.
The previously undisclosed vulnerability made it possible for a remote attacker to bypass Hotmail's password recovery service and exploit the bug to reset the password using their own values, according to a notice from Vulnerability Laboratory. Hotmail has more than 350 million active users, and is the largest Web-based email service provider in the world

Students put tech to good use in Microsoft’s Imagine Cup contest
Teams of high school and college students competed April 23 in using technology to help improve education, health care, the environment, and other pressing issues, reports the Seattle Times. It looked almost like a scene from an old-time video arcade: teenagers and young adults crowded around computer screens and displays, buzzing excitedly. But instead of “Donkey Kong” or “Pac-Man,” students played on-screen shooting games that obliterated diseases, or they waved their arms in front of a Kinect sensor to change the slope of a line on a screen and the math equation that generated the line.

The corporate economy is booming
Economic statistics have been terrible of late. And this is not because we've had disappointing job growth, tepid home sales, or slipping consumer confidence. What's really terrible is that the gloomy macro data distracted investors from the powerful momentum propelling corporate profits.
Weighing those inputs is a daily challenge. Sure it's nice that General Electric (GE -1.91%) nipped its earnings estimates on the strength of a 14% revenue surge in its industrial businesses. But how long can that go on with Spanish bond yields around 6%?
And sure, Honeywell (HON -0.69%) and Microsoft (MSFT -0.80%) are up after even stronger reports, but what about the recent uptick in jobless claims?
There's been a lot of discussion of late about when record corporate profit margins might revert to their long-term average far below current levels, and my guess would be not for a good long while.

Go Ahead and Sneer, But Microsoft’s Windows 8 Could be Huge
Have you heard about the hot tech item for 2012 -- it’s the PC. Walt Mossberg, the closely followed tech columnist at the Wall Street Journal and an Apple (AAPL) devotee by all accounts, told readers recently to hold off buying a new laptop until the fall when there should be an exciting set of new offerings using Microsoft’s (MSFT) anticipated Windows 8 operating system.
The new Windows seeks, among other advances, to challenge Apple’s touch-screen functionality. Microsoft has been riding the wave of a revival in the much-maligned PC this year, as its stock has surged ahead of the broader market. by Michael McHugh

Nvidia says Xbox 360 graphics power will hit mobile devices by 2014
Nvidia aims to deliver the graphics power behind gaming consoles like Microsoft's Xbox 360 to mobile devices by the year 2014, which could mark a further shift to mobile gaming.
An Nvidia slide revealed by AnandTech shows its forecast for the GPU industry, which sees relatively little change in consoles, steady growth for PCs, and sharp growth for mobile devices.
The solid lines show estimated performance, which will see mobile devices matching the graphics power of the Xbox 360 next year and then surpassing it the year after. The dotted lines show trends, which suggests the power match being made in 2014, while the console market advances a little further.

One of the biggest video game franchises ever failing to launch a movie at the peak of its popularity due to creative differences and stubborn greed. A new article for Wired fills in a few details and examines the “culture clash” between the tech/gaming world at Microsoft and the egos of Hollywood, and how it led to the movie’s permanent place in Development Hell history. The piece, from Jamie Russell’s book GENERATION XBOX: How Video Games Invaded Hollywood, includes quotes from insiders close the deal and director Neill Blomkamp (District 9), who speaks candidly about how the production was “a clusterf*ck from day one.” Here is what happened to Halo: by Jeff Leins

Microsoft to Pull Plug on XP in Two Years
Microsoft has kicked off what it calls a "two-year countdown" to the death of Windows XP and the Office 2003 productivity suite.
Separately, Microsoft announced that Windows Vista, the problem-plagued operating system that never really took hold among customers, exited mainstream support on April 10. In a product's extended support phase, Microsoft provides security patches to registered users but offers other fixes, including reliability and stability updates, only to organizations that have support contracts with the company.

Shuttleworth: The Internet Is Changing, Not Dying
The world is moving increasingly towards environments where consumers and employees download apps from sanitized app stores and use software that is native to the devices on which they run. This is happening as a result of the increasingly important role of mobility in business and consumer life, and the security threats that lurk in the World Wide Web. Not only are app stores becoming more prevalent in both corporate and personal contexts, but companies are using virtualization technology that allows them to serve employees virtual images of software, with the effect that data is isolated from the web, and servers are insulated from unknown intruders. So does the emergence of these closed systems mean the web is losing relevance?

Microsoft automates Office 365 installs
Microsoft has updated its automated software development tools to the new Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2012, and in a sign it wants to push its cloudy productivity has added the ability to automate Office 365 deployments.
Details are sketchy at present, but the download page for the software promises “Comprehensive tools and guidance to efficiently manage large-scale deployments of Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 365.” That's a step up from the “Office 365 Assessment Report” offered in the tool's predecessor, the Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit, which did little more than check if PCs were capable of running Office 365.

Windows Phone to beat Android
Microsoft has always seen its Windows operating system as one of the pillars of its business. With the release of Windows Phone 7, Microsoft made it very clear that the operating system they were selling in that space was an important one for them and one that was targeted solely at phones. This allowed them to focus the operating system for a specific kind of use, with a different operating system being available for tablets (the disastrously named Windows RNT). The radical new Metro UI interface they brought to their phones is also slated to make it into desktop version of their flagship operating system as well as into the Xbox interface. This points to Microsoft sharing Apple’s view that a single integrated experience between all operating systems they offer is where the future is.
This clearly sets up the mobile landscape for a repeat of the desktop OS wars of the 1980s/1990s with a key difference. This time, there are two strong players looking to leverage their position on one end of the spectrum to get a larger slice of the overall pie: Apple will leverage its success in the mobile world to help increase the footprint of its computer offering while Microsoft will come at it in the reverse direction, trying to leverage its desktop footprint to get at the mobile market. by Tristan Louis

Sounded good, but strange. Microsoft is a business, and they are not free.

Microsoft Research: Bringing Sexy Back
Everywhere you look on Microsoft's Redmond, WA, campus, there are bicycles and places to store them.
Microsoft Surface
Walking the halls of Microsoft’s sprawling campus (many buildings, multiple locations), you’re struck not by an uptight atmosphere, but by how similar it is to other tech companies. The walls are covered in art, meeting notes and interface ideas (they have a lot of marker-friendly walls). Virtually every building has a vast commons area where co-workers hang out and hash out ideas. There are ping-pong and even pool tables (though I rarely saw anyone using them). There are bicycles everywhere, electric car ports and Microsoft minivan transportation. I saw in-house coffee shops and, while there’s no free lunch, all the drinks are free.
The Microsoft you don’t know, however, is nowhere more in evidence than in Microsoft Research. It’s a 20-year-old group where some of Microsoft’s most interesting — dare we say edgiest — ideas percolate and sometimes come to fruition. No, it’s not where the company builds Windows 8, but it could be the place where some of Windows 8’s biggest innovations begin. It was not the birthplace of Xbox 360, but Kinect had its germination there. Lance Ulanoff

Microsoft Finally Cramming Skype into Xbox
Now Microsoft's broad view of Skype is officially getting even bigger. While we already knew Skype would eventually land on Microsoft's living room cash cow, the Xbox 360, two recent job listings makes the assumptions 100-percent concrete: one for Software Development Engineer, Xbox - Skype, and one for Engineering Manager, Xbox - Skype.
"We’re building the next generations of our products and technology right here in London and Skype is looking to hire a Development Manager to lead the development of our experiences on Xbox," the Engineering Manager listing reports. "As an experienced Engineering Manager, you will have a strong technical background developing client software and will bring a deep understanding of architecture and resource efficient engineering to the team." Microsoft pulls Office 2011 SP2 from AutoUpdate
On April 12, Microsoft released the Service Pack 2 update for its popular Office 2011 for Mac software suite, which offered a number of improvements for the suite, including many for its Outlook e-mail client. However, following this announcement, it became apparent that a number of users were having problems with corrupted identity databases when installing the new software.
Microsoft originally tackled this problem by notifying users of the problem and offering instructions for how to correct the issue either before or after the SP2 update had been applied. However, today the company announced on its Office for Mac blog that it will be temporarily halting the distribution of the update through its AutoUpdate utility until it finds a resolution to the problem. by Topher Kessler

Microsoft Applies for Patent on Augmented Reality, 3-D Audio
But now it looks like Microsoft may have a solution. In a recently published patent application, the company describes technology that could solve the “outside the sweet spot” conundrum, providing listeners with a polished 3-D audio experience no matter where they’re sitting, or even standing.
Published Thursday, Microsoft’s patent application describes augmented-reality technology that tracks a user with a “depth camera system” and delivers content-accurate, 3-D audio to the listener, regardless of his or her position in a room. The system collects room and listener position data to deliver specific audio cues — instructions from virtual team mates, gunshots, chirping birds, whatever — inside a user’s unique (and often fluid) soundscape.
The patent application also describes a data-collection scenario in which the listener wears one or more microphones that capture the acoustic properties of a room. Self-calibrating surround-sound systems use a similar technology: A user places a microphone where he typically sits and the system adjusts audio output for that targeted area, delivering an optimal surround-sound experience.
Microsoft’s application also describes a data-collection scenario in which the listener wears sensors that help the system determine one’s position and rotation. The sensors could be fixed to a headset, or placed on another location of the user’s body. By Roberto Baldwin

The newly announced capability can check the devices for compliance with corporate policies surrounding passwords, encrypting data, antivirus, anti-spyware and auto updates, according to the Building Windows 8 blog. Microsoft datacenters: the fecal matter has hit the rotating blades
There’s certainly no shortage of waste to power such installations, though currently waste management and the high-density connectivity needed for reliable datacenter operations are two things that are rarely found together. Microsoft’s focus on developing grid-independent fuel cells is, among other things, an attempt to decouple the installation of a datacenter from the requirement that the infrastructure be upgraded to deliver sufficient power. The blog talks about the potential of building these conatinerized datacenters alongside water treatment plants or landfills, to get direct access to the biogas these facilities produce.

What Happened To The "Halo" Movie?
The Halo movie seemed perfect—a sci-fi alien flick with exotic locations, an iconic main character, a fanbase of millions, etc. Yet it never did see the light of day, despite years of speculation and rumors. Neill Blomkamp's version of it got canned and many design elements made it into District 9 (a good film in its own rights) instead. Rupert Sanders made a gorgeous, cinematic trailer for Halo 3: ODST, but a trailer is all it ever was. By Michael Rougeau Story

Intel teases Letexo/Cove Point Windows 8 Ultrabook Hybrid
Intel is pretty active lately and it’s easy to understand why: Microsoft will launch Windows 8, their first desktop OS to support ARM processors, so Intel has to do something with its x86 architecture, which is more expensive and consumes more power (but it’s also superior in performance).
As specs hinted by Intel I have to mention the 12.5 inch screen, two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI out and a price point of only $1000, much cheaper than the Lenovo Yoga, another touchscreen ultrabook concept I like. I just hope it will be powered by the new Ivy Bridge platform, not the crappy Atom CPUs Intel is so proud off. Author: Ionut Popa (John Pope)

Skepticism mounts over Windows RT's enterprise role
Omissions from the feature set of Windows RT are making analysts increasingly skeptical that enterprises will gravitate toward tablets running the new forked version of Windows.
Earlier this week, Microsoft confirmed that Windows RT, the operating system designed to run on battery-saving devices powered by ARM system-on-a-chip (SoC) silicon, will not include a pair of features critical to enterprises: Connectivity to a company's network, dubbed "domain joining," and support for Group Policies, a mechanism that enterprise IT administrators use to micro-manage machines.

It seems therefore that Exchange Online has been doing a little better in its competition against Gmail recently. There was the small matter of the APAC outage on March 16, but no one really counts a problem that only affected people at the other end of the world, do they? At least, that’s what it seemed like based on the lack of coverage in the mainstream IT media.
